SN2 ESP — v1.0.0-beta

In-game ESP for Subnautica 2 by TheHolyOneZ.

Rendered directly in the game's DirectX 12 swap-chain — no external overlay,
no console, no UE4SS debug window required at runtime.

Features

  • Categories: Creatures, Resources, Items, Highlights (Angel Comb — ignores the distance cap), Blueprints (scannable fragments)
  • Per-class filters for every actor type the scanner knows about, with a live search box, All-on / All-off / Invert buttons
  • Snipe Mode (on by default): only scan + track the categories and per-class boxes you've ticked, so the 3000-entity tracker never gets eaten by swarms you don't care about
  • World-space dots, screen-space boxes, optional tracers from the bottom of the screen, name labels and distance text
  • Adjustable max distance (10 m – 2000 m) with quick-jump preset buttons
  • Adjustable FOV, dot radius, and per-category colour pickers

Requirements

| What | Where to get it |
|---|---|
| Subnautica 2 | Steam |
| UE4SS v3.0.1+ | https://www.nexusmods.com/subnautica2/mods/36?tab=files |

UE4SS is the modding framework this DLL plugs into — install it once into
Subnautica 2, then drop this mod on top.

Installation

1) Install UE4SS into Subnautica 2

Download a UE4SS release and extract
its contents into the game's Binaries/Win64 folder — the folder that
contains Subnautica2-Win64-Shipping.exe (the actual shipping binary;
the Subnautica2.exe at the game root is just a launcher).

On a default Steam install the full path is:

…/steamapps/common/Subnautica2/Subnautica2/Binaries/Win64/
├── Subnautica2-Win64-Shipping.exe ← the real game binary, UE4SS goes next to it
├── dwmapi.dll ← from UE4SS
└── ue4ss/ ← from UE4SS (contains Mods/, etc.)

(The Subnautica2/ repetition in the path is correct — outer folder is the
Steam install root, inner folder is the UE project name.)

Launch the game once via Steam. You should see UE4SS's console window
briefly — that confirms UE4SS is loading. Close the game.

2) Install the ESP mod

Copy the SN2_ESP folder (sibling of this README) into UE4SS's
Mods folder so the final path is:

Subnautica2/Subnautica2/Binaries/Win64/ue4ss/Mods/SN2_ESP/
├── dlls/
│ └── main.dll ← the ESP DLL
└── enabled.txt ← empty file; presence enables the mod

Linux / Steam Deck Users: If you are running the game on Linux or Steam Deck via Proton, you must configure Steam to force load the custom DLL. Go to your Steam Library -> Right-click Subnautica 2 -> Properties -> General -> Launch Options, and paste the following command exactly as shown:

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dwmapi=n,b" %command%

That's it.

3) (Optional) Recommended UE4SS setting

If you get a black screen on load, open Binaries/Win64/ue4ss/UE4SS-settings.ini
and set:

bUseUObjectArrayCache = false

Save, restart the game.

Usage

  1. Launch the game and load into a save (the mod needs the world loaded before there's anything to scan).
  2. Press Right Shift to toggle the menu.
  3. Tick ESP Enabled — it's on by default, but every category is off so the mod doesn't draw anything in the lobby.
  4. Tick the categories you want (Creatures / Resources / Items / Highlights / Blueprints) and dial in the per-class filters underneath.
  5. Right Shift again to hide the menu — markers keep rendering.

Default key

  • Right Shift — toggle menu

Stats line (inside the menu)

DX12 hook: installed | Render: ready
Unreal: ready | Tracked: 1247 / 3000 (alive 1247) | Rendered: 38
Last scan: 1.93 ms (every 1.0s)
  • Tracked — how many entities are in the live cache (capped at 3000)
  • Rendered — how many of those passed all filters and were drawn this frame
  • An orange !! near cap warning appears at ≥ 95% of the cap

Troubleshooting

| Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|
| Menu doesn't appear on Right Shift | Make sure the game window is focused. Check that UE4SS loaded (its console flashes briefly at game start) |
| DX12 hook: off in the stats line | UE4SS didn't manage to install the hook. Verify UE4SS is installed and that the game uses DX12 (default) |
| No markers in-world | Open the menu, tick at least one category, load a save, wait a second for the first scan |
| Black screen on launch | Set bUseUObjectArrayCache=false in UE4SS-settings.ini (see above) |
| Game hangs on Proton/Wine | Use Proton 8.0+ or VKD3D-Proton — older versions miss the DX12 vtable slots this mod patches |

Notes

  • IMPORTANT: EULA & Multiplayer Safety: Subnautica 2's publisher EULA contains standard blanket legalese that technically restricts modifications. However, the game developers (Unknown Worlds) have publicly stated they fully support the modding community and will not take action against player-made mods, as long as they are distributed for free. Because the game has no automated anti-cheat client, using UE4SS and this ESP will not trigger automatic account bans. Still, use it responsibly and avoid disrupting public matchmaking lobbies.
  • Multiplayer & Co-op Mechanics: This mod is fully functional in co-op sessions, but because it reads the game's local memory via UE4SS, network replication rules apply: - If you are the Host: Your PC manages the world state, meaning the ESP will scan and display everything normally. - If you are a Client (Joining a friend): The game server only sends your PC data for objects and creatures in your immediate vicinity. Distant entities literally do not exist in your local memory until you move closer to them, so your ESP won't display markers for them until they load into your local network bubble.
  • Safe Execution: The mod interacts with the world purely by reading game state via UE4SS's UObject system. It does not write to the game's memory or inject network packets, ensuring zero risk of save corruption or multiplayer desyncs.
  • Antivirus Flags: The DLL is a standard x86_64 Windows PE binary. Antivirus software may flag it because it performs runtime DX12 vtable patching to install the Present hook. This is completely safe and is the exact same method used by standard game overlays (such as Discord, Steam, or Xbox Game Bar) to paint over game graphics.
  • HUD Rendering: ESP markers are drawn directly from the game's DirectX 12 Present hook. Because of this, they render on top of the 3D world but will also draw on top of the game's built-in HUD and menus. This is a standard property of Present-hook overlays; bypassing it would require hooking much deeper into Unreal's internal render pipeline.
